I am more creative in collaboration with people. People inspire me and thus I create. I can also be really creative on my own when I really let my own mind fly w/ ideas. I cannot however do my art without people involved.
do you think this has to do with your mixed heritage or is that irrelevant here? In other words, does pulling culture from different places make you more susceptible to collaboration?

Perhaps, I never really thought of that before. I think pulling from different cultures, different art forms, and dancers who really show their personality inspires me.

I am a graphic designer and visual artist and I think I need both to be creative. When I collaborate with people, I always learn something new and get extremely inspired by others' creations and ideas. However, having my own quiet time to process all that inspiration is necessary as well. I cannot discount all those "aha" moments while in the middle of dreaming or riding a train.

Collaboration happens on so many levels and can mean so many things - collaboration can be a simple conversation or a complex performance. Either way, there's something that can be procured from these moments or the ranges of moments that exist in between. It's neither and either-or. It's both for me.

As a relatively recent New Yorker, has the city changed your perspective on this? Did living in California provide a different type of dynamic between solo time and collaboration?
I feel like NY allows artists to be in closer proximity to one another. What I enjoy the most are the discussions I have so often with so many artists. There's something about NY that compels me to go out more often. It's easier to explore and I've felt it's been much easier to meet a diverse range of people from different countries and cultures. Being a newbie to NY, I have to say that I'm still discovering how to just "be" here. Nico, you got me thinking that for now, collaboration is very important for me because it's a way to be more connected to NY and all its offerings. I need collaboration not only to be creative, but to be part of this place. Thanks!
