From Culturalista Joan Schirle:

A French artist friend of mine recently was working on a mask project in Burkina Faso. He wrote me with this question:

"While I was working in Burkina Faso I was asked by some important tribal animist mask society there to help them. They want to maintain their animist roots by preserving their mask ceremonies, they specifically try to avoid to become tourist attractions. They are totally conscious that their secular practice has to be integrated in a changing world. They want the young to be proud of their heritage while at the same time cautious about monotheists religions which are trying to eradicate these practices. They do not want their tradition to become museum pieces.
My questions are: do you have some suggestions about who I could contact that is already defending native cultures, do you know of any foundation that would fund a preservation project ?"

I don't know what to suggest--might any of you have suggestions for him about foundations, groups, etc that could help?

THANKS,
Joan
