Greeting Room: Introduce Yourself!

Hello Culturalistas! Here is a dedicated space for you to introduce yourselves and to welcome new friends. Tell us as little or as much as you would like about who you are. Hallo all,

I'm David Richmond and I'm delighted to join your community. I'm from Bristol in the UK.

My work is about helping people make the most of the arts for personal and community development.

I'd love to hear about any examples of the way in which art can change lives particularly if it helps us learn more about the role of arts in development.

The journey of my documentary film - Finding Carlton - Uncovering the Story of Jazz in India ( See www.findingcarlton.com) has been a huge learning process, particularly since it has not received any formal grant or foundation funding. It got under way in 2009 , one of the worst years for Arts funding in the US, and its cross cultural theme did not appear to be of interest to the organizations we approached in India. Finally, it was grassroots funding methods including a Kickstarter campaign that played a big part in the process. The three years of learnings have been incredible and I hope I can share some of them with other creative people, especially those such as myself who lacked the 'credential' or for whatever reason were turned down for funding.

Hi everybody, my name is Gilbert from Kenya, i work as a designer at the Nairobi National museum. My work entails graphic design, interactive design, museum exhibition design and model making among other duties. I paint during my spare time. I love working with acrylics on paper and encourage my children to do their thing as well. During my holidays i plan workshops for community on the Kenyan Ethiopian border whose culture and life has been disrupted by senseless cross border killings. The place is known as Todonyang and the community i work with are Turkana. I would like to make friendships that would help me expand on the workshops and to create awareness of whats going down here...so far i have held workshops on paper making and weaving. The participants are nomadic pastoralists and they are naturally adroit in art. If you need to know more about me or the project please inbox me.
