I just heard  today that I was rejected by an art show and I feel pretty low about it!   It's hard not to feel it's not a personal rejection of me!   I know I can't be the only one this happens and I want to hear how others cope with it.
Should I try again - or quit while I'm ahead?!!

Happens a lot, I can say no matter how diverse or unusual or left out you may feel, there is always groups or people in the world who will love what you do when you are true to your heart with your work. My suggestion is to apply again, but shoot for a better show as well, in fact apply for a consecutive string of shows to keep you moving..small and large. All the best.
I hope responding to your question within 10 minutes prevented you from quitting....
Wayne,
Thanks for kind words! I am a bit confused by this rejection since I recently had another, more important show. I guess that judge's vary in their opinions and their tastes differ! st got a dud!
I will keep going, as you say. Painting is, to me, almost as important as breathing. Getting revognition is great, but I have to remember that I paint for myself, not really for other people!

The art show that rejected you is not meant to be with you. It's better to get rid of unnecessary baggage. Probably, psychologically, you are rejecting them as well. It's a mutual rejection, nothing to feel hurt about. Never quit, though!
Neha,
tTank for your support. I suppose you are right, this just wasn't meant to be! I have no choice but to keep on painting : it is so vital to me, and I hope next time will be better. Have already applied for another show and for an award, though it is hard not to be pesamistic.
Create Culture has been a great outlet for me, and hearing from nice people like you help me keep going!

Oh my goodness, don't give it a second thought! You get in some shows, you don't get in some, you get a major award on a piece, it gets rejected from another show - just enjoy the ride when it's good and move on when it's not. You know you're a real artist if you care a lot more about making your art than about what happens next. Keep entering shows. There are ALL kinds of judges. Everybody gets their days in the sun. Over time you'll notice you're getting in more shows and getting more awards. Keep hanging out with other artists. Heck, join art organizations, set up shows, be the one who hires judges so you can watch what they do and understand their thinking process. Be of service to your fellow artists, get involved. Soon you will be laughing over how far you have come. Soon you will be the one someone like you is asking for advice. Love to you.
Thank you, Julie, you make me feel good. Yeah, just gotta keep going, I am disabled- so O can't always get around to things going on around me, but I came up with something new that turns me on: donating for fund raising events. I figure it's a way to get exposure, while giving me the double-whammy of donating to something I feel strongly about, even though I don't have big bucks!
Thank you so much for caring enough to comment supportuively!!

Yes, exposure, exposure, exposure, for Your Artwork. For several years, my Church had an auction for missionaries. I contributed Artwork at several of them. The last year that they had one, I contributed jewelry that I'd made.
My Mom was so funny, they'd put my Artwork up for bid, they'd start the bidding, if she thought the Artwork wasn't getting a high enough price, she bought it! LOL, I love You Momma! Some of the Artwork, is in frames in my house right now, I love looking at it! hee-hee! ;>)

My Mom is my best advocate, and harshest critic, at the same time. I do alot of abstract stuff, she likes Art, where you can look at it, and tell what it is, I guess she likes realism?
It did make me feel kind of bad when some my Art didn't bring very much money, I was kind of embarrased to tell you the truth.
Then I got mad! So did my Mommy, LOL!
;>D
Hey, I guess I was in an Art show after all ! LOL, see, I take life easy, no matter where my Art takes me in the future, I never want to forget where I started out from. :>) Alot of times, it's just being in the right place, at the right time, and being around the right people.
Thought about that the other day, but it was Music, I was thinking about. The Music stars, today, and in the past, some of them, are very, very good, and I'm a fan, but I think they need to always remember how very blessed they are, to be where they are today.
There are so many Musicians who are awesome, but no one hears of them, yes, they need to be grateful, because they got the break, that so many others possibly never will.
Rejection is an integral part of any creative life. It helps us fine-tune our own “voice” and to focus on appropriate avenues for our work. I believe we all have a special gift so whatever you do, don’t give up. What’s yours is yours and nobody can take that away from you. More opportunities will come your way. There’s plenty out there for each and every artist. The beauty of a creative life is that you can create your own shows. Julie Engelmann just shared so many wonderful ideas. Good Luck!
outward grace. inward sour grapes.
it is alos true that "NO" is just the beginning.
Never, never quit Amy! I've never been in an Art show, so really, can't comment on that, to be honest with you, from human being, ( and girl, LOL,) to another, I think, I'd cry, then it would make me even more determined to keep going, not to prove them wrong, but to prove myself right. I sold my first drawing at the end of 2008, (yeah, framed the money order, LOL!) The drawing went on a CD cover, as he's a Musician. The same person bought, 10 more drawings, ( think he was just trying to help me out,) he let me keep the drawings, so that I could possibly sell them in the future. He asked me to do 3 more, several months ago. A friend of mine at myspace, bought 2 more drawings, and hung them in her bathroom, LOL, yes, bathroom Art, better than reading a book, I guess. Let's see, that's all together, maybe, 20 drawings that I've sold, which is like a dream to me. Of course, bill collectors are not impressed that I've sold some artwork, and I don't like the idea of "starving," so, I call myself, "an Artist with a day job.
I just take life easy my friend, I believe in destiny, as in being in the right place, at the right time, and with the right people, but also, I believe in hard work, being an Artist is work, isn't it? One of the Artist's in the Art colony here where I live, was featured in a newspaper article, and that's what she said, that some people seem to think Artist's live the life of leisure, working when they want to, kind of a bohemian existence, but for her, it's hard to come up with new ideas, and she works.
Please don't give up, it will happen for you, at the right place, and at the right time, and someone will notice. Don't give up!
Peace :>)
We love it, that's what keeps us going
I've only been computer literate a little over 3 years now, probably never would have had my Art seen without stretching myself, to learn how to use a computer.
That was one of the best feelings I've ever experienced in my life. The town where I live is an Artists' colony, the High Museum of Art is right down the road from me, I'm sure that all of the Artists who ever had their art exhibited there, were rejected.
I'm a Writer too, some of my Writer friends have found that they will submit their wrirting, and it may be 6 months later, when it's excepted, I've found that out to with my art, the time I give up, magic happens, and someone likes it. I like money, but just to have someone else appreciate my art, that means the world to me.
Don't give up, keep creating, and believe in magic, and when it happens, know, know, that You deserve it, and enjoy it! :>)
