So, these days I'm really thinking about how art can be an ethical and political tool that can help people become aware of the realities we live in, collectively and dialogically. It seems that, given the craziness of the global economy, now is the right moment to really push for sustainable ways of living so as to stop abusing the planet and living beings.
My idea is this: a curated multi-media art exhibit focused on activism and awareness of global problems. It would be a combination of visual art media, performance, spoken word, and tactile pieces. It could be hosted by any public space, like a coffee shop, where people commonly gather. The show would be opened with lots of publicity, and the artists would be present to explain their work, and to lead a discussion of peoples' reactions to the art. Too often art viewing is a private, silent act, when really art gives us so much to talk about.
This doesn't even have to be done by 'professional' artists. It can just be an experiment with creativity and politics. What do you think? Are you an artist and an activist? If so, we should talk...
