As the U.S. government has recently given away billions of dollars in stimulus packages, I'm asking the question - What would you do if you had a million dollars to spend on an arts project?  The twist is the project has to reduce unemployment.  Give us your most imaginative and/or practical answers.

I WOULD BRING THE WORLD'S CULTURES IN ONE PLATFORM TO CREATE PEACE AND HARMONY:
THROUGH VARIOUS INITIATIVES OF CULTURAL STUDIES ACROSS WORLD EXCHANGE IDEAS,KNOWLEDGE & CREATIVITY ETC. RE-ACTIVATE THE DIEING CULTURES OF THE WORLD. INVEST, CREATE EMPLOYMENT AND IDENTIFY THE CORE VALUES OF THESE CULTURES. MAKING PERFORMING ART AND NON PERFORMING ART AS PART OF THE SOCIAL SYSTEM WHERE EACH INDUVITUAL IS INCLUDED. THIS WOULD CHANGE THE MINDSET OF PEOPLE FROM WAR CULTURE TO CULTURE OF UNDERSTANDING . PERFORMING ART, VISUAL ART, CULTURAL SHOW ARE ENTERTAINMENT TO HUMAN SOUL.
Very noble Raj. I particularly like the part about changing the mindset of people......Since I put up the post I should probably say what I would do with one million big ones......I think I would start a social network that emphasized connecting artists across cultures. The network would contain a funding platform where artists pitched their project ideas. Members would vote on their favorite idea and the project with the most votes would get a cut from the million to make their idea a reality. What do you think?
One million dollars would be invested in making a large scale sculpture featuring multi media and textures, venues, formats, etc that would landscape a huge part of the nation. It would symbolize just how far we have come as a nation And becaue of its complexity, the actual making of the materials, building and planning, producing, getting permits and such, scouting locations, trucking, the advertising and promotions and communities that would be involved would emply thousands of people. Just how may thousand, I don't know, but I would estimate nationally (because it is a national project and momument to this country and the arts) it might employ somewhere between fifty and one hundred thousand people. I woulkd then write a book about the experience and then I would make the documentary about the making of the project. That would employ more people, eventually it would go to DVD. The money made would go back into an arts foundation to give grants and raise money for grants in artists of all fields. Thus promoting employment, creativity, jobs in publishing, the movie business and the other jobs that comwith it, as in awards ceremonies, audience viewership, maintenaince and the list goes on! One million dollars can far these days in business and the business of the arts. I would also ahve composers write songs that would go with the project and a score to the documentary so that more people in the music business end of movies and the recording industry itself would be employed by this venture. Just an idea. Sinmcerely, Michael J. Menna, Stage director and Choreographer, Published Author, Instructor of the dance
Yeah, but what the sculpture be of?
well...it may take quite a bit more than a million dollars...but i would institute an art appreciation program starting in kindergarten.
it would use various arts as a means of teaching.
art can teach history, social sciences and cross cultural awareness, even science.
it would include modern art vehicles such as photography and video, or computer coding, as well as more traditional ones of sculpture, and painting
music and dance would be a part of this as not only art forms but venues by which cultural awareness can be taught.
the program would seek to tie art and culture to other areas of education rather than setting it aside as an extra curricular event.
a hands on approach to creating art of their own would correspond with learning about art through the ages, from neolithic cave paintings and petroglyphs to videography, and would extend to the whole world and every culture as its scope.
i think of learning in kindergarten for example, not just the color wheel of how the primary colors blend to form the others, but also of what materials in nature were used by early artists to derive their hues, their mediums.
ii think of how history could be taught through the artistic representations of any given era...what was going on politicallly, technologically, etc.
i think of how social studies and geography might be learned, not just though maps and texts but by understanding the art of a region...its culture.
this kind of a program, rather than being a class called art or art appreciation would be an intrinsic part of the learning experience within each subject.
so it would take a total re-thinking of education.
i have homeschooled all my children at one time or another and am homeschooling my adopted six year old boy (who has autism) now. it is my experience that we learn better if we learn fully. and in an integrated fashion, not one compartmentalized.
the importance of art in society at any given time in history or place on the globe says much about their values. in my mind, art is not given nearly enough thought and honor in the western industrialized nations of the 21st century.
integration of arts of every kind into the curriculum would do society a great benefit.
I would teach the art of living. Starting with teaching children to understand the beauty of growing good food from good soil. And through art expression to tell us their story, to show the world how they have achieved this. Basic composting to diverse heritage seeds and climate appropriate plants, includes everything to nurture life, water, air, light...We have to get back to our foundation to understand where we are heading. Thank you for letting me dream a moment, now back to work.....Wayne
I would travel the world and use dance as a meduim for social and personal change!!! Movement therapy and choreography are powerful tools for individual and global change.
Where would you go? maybe to Vegas and bet it all on the roulette tables? or would you head to India?
I actually would head to India. How did you know??
I am working on a project about India right now and would love to go and create and share. I want to use dance to bring awareness to all emotions in life, joy, grief and anxiety. Movement speaks in ways no other form of expression can.
Vegas..never! i have no desire. Unless I am on a layover to go to india!
I saw your profile & awesome website.....So let me ask you this. How did your move from India influence your art? Inquiring minds want to know. oh, and what part of India would you go to?
Hi,
I am from India--Southernmost part. You are welcome to be my guest for as long as you like. But for your traveling you wont have to spend anything on your stay and food. I will be only too glad to be of help. I am a retired professor. All the best. May your wish come true!
I would embark on a national project to help students develop their drawing skills. This would sharpen their sense of observation and help them see the gestalt of things even when observing detail. These are invaluable skills in problem solving that will definitely help them in their future
II am not happy with the present Art lessons in most schools. I think that drawing skills are as important as Math, reading and writing.
