Great article! Some of my students while teaching in Los Angeles were gang members. What the individuals in this article talk about resonates with what I saw and heard from my students, who I loved, even the ones involved in these kinds of activities. It revealed to me how multi layered we are as human beings. And the possibility of transformation, through the arts, baking bread... Thanks for sharing.

confirmation of ability to change.
Last month we baked bread in class to keep troubled kids in school, when they are physically hungry they are unlikely to show up for class. Very few can resist the smell of freshly baked bread.
Comment by Sarah Queblatin on June 10, 2011 at 1:41am Hi Everyone,
I'm not sure if we have guidelines on personal fundraising but in case we don't have one (yet!) I hope its ok to share my fundraiser so I can take my Masters in Expressive Arts in Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding at the European Graduate School in Switzerland.
Care to share this friendsraiser in case? - http://www.indiegogo.com/Help-Sarah-Master-Arts-for-Peacebuilding?c...
I'm at a point wherein I would rather say Thank you instead of Sorry for taking your time :-) So thank you for sharing presence and blessings if you ever feel like sharing this to your network and friends.
Always for peace,
Sarah

Comment by Dieudonne AMISI MUTAMBALA on May 8, 2011 at 2:02pm Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am very happy to see some news from INEE, and specificaly its Adolescent and Youth Task Team - AYTT. I am member of this network and its mentioned team.
My DR Congo-based organisation is called Artists for Humanity - ArtHum, its main concerns are Research, Publishing, Councelling, Training and Advocacy in Education, Human Right and Conflict transformation.
We use arts-based and cultural means to strengthen the peacebuilding dynamics in post-conflict and reconstruction setting of DR Congo. In other words, this intervention is part of the multi sectoral and inter complementary mechanisms towards peace, stability and sustainable development in the country.
Therefore we confirm our membership within this discussion group and are ready to be part of any initiative - such as workshop, conference, training... - or any joint programme/project which would be launch for the same purpose by the group or any of its members.
Thanks in advance for sharing your announcement on time,
Dieudonne AMISI MUTAMBALA

I just posted a link to his work last week on my art education blog. Great article . I'm going to re-post it under Resources on the Web, so it doesn't get lost as this comment link moves with time.
Best

Comment by cindy maguire on February 17, 2011 at 2:14pm Does anyone have available assessments of their programs? See request below. It's from the Adolescent Youth Task Team with INEE: Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies

Dear AYTT Members,
I would like to introduce you to Jessika Kjellgren, who is a Masters student in International Affairs at Columbia University. Together with three of her colleagues, Jessika is working on a literature review of best practices in youth-targeted alternative learning programs for the IRC's Children and Youth Protection and Development Unit. The project aims to answer the question, What components should be included in best practice youth programs?, and Jessika has requested the help of the AYTT in identifying case studies and impact evaluations of specific youth programs.
IRC has identified four outcomes that they would like to see youth programs achieve:
1) Youth are literate and numerate.
2) Youth demonstrate goal-setting behavior.
3) Youth have self-esteem, including social cohesion.
4) Youth have increased financial assets (income and savings).
Please take a few minutes to send Jessika at jk3311@columbia.edu<mailto:jk3311@columbia.edu> any case studies or impact evaluations, beyond the AYTT Annotated Bibliography, that you have on hand relating to the four points above. Jessika has requested that, due to the timeline for the project, items be sent by next Thursday, February 24.
As always, thank you for your involvement and support!
Best wishes,
Jamie
Comment by Sarah Queblatin on January 19, 2011 at 3:33pm A very very good resource on making our work in the arts effective. I am reading this material again as I shift from cognitive peacebuilding work to a full time artistic path that engages the self, community, and the spirit. So important for artists to validate the effectivity of our work!
