3D (2009/2010)

The conversion from 2D to 3D had been a development I had in mind for 18 months before I created my first sculpture. Inspired by the painting created by the Italian renaissance artist Giovanni Battista Moroni (1520/4 – 1579). His painting ‘The Vestal Virgin Tuccia’ (about 1555) has influenced me to create new pieces of work in 3D form, working in a mix media approach contradicting the intention of the painting. The painting by Moroni is proposed as a personification of Chastity but also represents the Roman priestess of Vesta, Tuccia, who proved her virginity by miraculously carrying water in a sieve. My work is a contrastive argument against women’s traditional views on their sexuality and the taboo of female sexuality.
