Modeled in Azemour, Morocco. Estebanico was the first great Black Man in the Americas, He was born in Azemour, Moroco, taken slave by the Portuguese and brought to Florida with the Narvaez expedition of 1528. He made the first trek across what is now Mexico and the United States in 1535 with Cabeza de Vaca and two other Spaniards. He was also the first non Native American to see the Indian pueblos of the Southwest. This bust was modeled from life in Azemour, Morocco as a study for a monument to Estebanico for the XII Travelers Memorial of the Southwest.
