A young woman with the most serene countenance sat in the seat opposite me on a 12-hour bus trip. She had a tiny baby with her as well. She was so very beautiful and seemed so self-contained. Unfortunately she had to put up with a drunken passenger for part of the way. I so admired the way that she kept him at bay merely with the way she shut him out with her superior self-possession. I was ready to jump up and hit on him like a junk-yard dog, but it was never necessary. She was in full control in the most gentle way. She seemed to have perfected a way of tuning people out to the extent that they just let up on her. All my thoughts, of course; I never spoke to her. I made the little mask months after the trip and had it for many years before I mounted it in this way.
