Journey to Spain

We took off for the month of September 2010 and traveled to Spain. From Barcelona to Majorca, then Sevilla to Marbella, spending a week in each area. On my birthday we spent the day at the Alhambra in Grenada - it was beyond words. I can only express in paint how stimulated my senses and emotions were by everything I saw.…See More

Return to Santa Fe

Every year I return to Santa Fe to paint and teach painting workshops. As the time nears, I start thinking about all the things I love about my time in Santa Fe. I go there to paint so my first week is spent walking the streets and dirt roads looking for sights and inspiration, the hardest part being picking from all the ideas that crowd into my head. The early morning walks with my Golden Retrievers and watercolor sketchbook, as we reacquaint ourselves with the familiar sights and our old…See More

Artistic Experiences I Have Had On My Travels
At Monet's garden - I was sitting in the spot where Monet painted the pond and bridge, and was by myself, at twilight. Smelled cigarette smoke and "thought, can't believe someone is smoking in here". Later was told no one was in the garden with me, and that Monet smoked a lot!

In Santa Fe NM - At the opening of his reception for Mountains, I got to speak to and shake hands with Wayne Thiebaud, my favorite living artist. He was quite charming and told me a story of why he puts a heart on his signature.
Places I Would Like To Visit
Monet's gardens was a thrill, seeing the garden and ponds for the fist time was like walking into a painting. Not only did it inspire my painting, but compelled me to create an artist garden where students and artists could come paint with beautiful views, color and texture. It is painting with organic matter instead of paint, and it really takes on a life of its own.
Venice was breathtaking, A city in the sea. a magical mystery how does it survive?
Catalina Island just an hour or so by boat off the coast but worlds away. No phones, no cars, no tv's just the beauty of the island for hikes and exploring.
But my all time best discovery was Santa Fe NM. I return every summer for several months to teach workshops and paint, we bought a condo near the Plaza where students from all over the world come for a week to paint and rejuvenate their creativity in Santa Fe. I get so inspired by the place and people, the visiting students and the total immersion in the arts of all kinds. The music in the Plaza is the after class destination for me and my Golden Retrievers, and any students.
Art Forms And Cultures I Would Like To Engage With
Can't think of just one! I really enjoy the feedback I get from teaching. I learn from everyone.
Love Balinese Batik, and all the amazing things being done in textiles.
I particularly am inspired by folk art all over the world.

Process of Creation - how to make a painting or raise kids

by Cathy Carey

The beginning part of the painting process goes fast and I feel a sense of accomplishment because it looks like I got a lot done! The end part wraps it all up and again I  feel a sense of accomplishment, since it is done, but the middle takes a long time, maybe weeks, months until I feel it is ready to be finished, lots of reworking, and some days it looks like I either 1. got…

Hi Cathy, you have a great memory; we did meet when we were both teaching at the Learning Methods and Material show.  I have always admired your bold use of color as a statement in your work and I look forward to being a part of the Create Culture community.  Thank you, Roni Sumer
