About Me And My Work
In performances and installations, I celebrate the beauty of creation while honoring what has passed, always trying to create spaces for a deep listening in the heart. In community projects, I bring topics like forgiveness as a key to peace into the public discourse. Since 1979, my calling has been to find "the spiritual in art" and my journey hence has centered on uncovering the meaning of the word "heartist."
Places I Would Like To Visit
My art began by the Rio Grande near Taos. My heart broke about the state of the earth and my creativity started to pour. Traveling is part of my art. In "Route 33: The Magic Road" I travel to every corner of New Mexico as an art pilgrim knitting together all 33 counties in a great weaving of some yet unfinished pattern. I dialogue about the art of peace and offer a ceremonial gathering "The Point of Tears."
Art Forms And Cultures I Would Like To Engage With
My dream collaboration is not a dream. I collaborate with many artists but Earth is my main collaborator. Actually she is my guide. On a more earthly plane, my wish currently is to collaborate with sculptor Tom Joyce and ethnomusicologist Steve Feld on a piece of mine titled Cosmic Bell.
My Creative Influences & Favorite Artists
I started creating as an artist when my heart broke and I let myself feel the deepest sorrow for the "endangered planet..." With the sorrow came an unshakable resolution and a new inspiration to speak on its behalf. So began my seven-year ritual performance "The Great Cleansing of the Rio Grande." Nicholas Roerich, Josef Beuys are artists I feel deeply connected with.
