About Me And My Work
Dr. Jaynie Aydin is a folklorist, visual anthropologist, and world dance researcher. She has lectured at UCLA, California State University Northridge, the Ventura Community Colleges, Istanbul Technical University, Trondheim Technical Institute in Norway, and the State Performance Conservatory at Aegean University (www.ege.edu.tr/en) in Izmir, Turkey. She received her PhD from UCLA’s department of World Arts and Cultures in June of 2007. IN 2008-2010 Jaynie was a Professor of Dance, Visual Communication, and Design at Yasar University in Izmir, Turkey. She is currently a visiting professor at UCLA's Fowler Museum and the Department of World Arts and Cultures and an assistant professor of dance, ethnography, culture and visual anthropology at European University of Lefke, in Lefke North Cyprus (www.eul.edu.tr)
Jaynie is a highly skilled field videographer and films dance events throughout the world. Under the guidance of visual anthropologist and philosopher John Bishop
(www.media-generation.net) and Turkish folklore archivist Abdurrahim Karademir, Jaynie has mastered how to film, archive, edit, and analyze ethnographic field footage. She is consistently gathering new dance research materials and has multiple documentary projects in post-production. Dances of Turkey Volume 1 is scheduled for public release in 2010.
In addition to being a scholar, Jaynie is a professional belly dance artist and has performed in nightclubs, celebrations, and staged public events around the world. She is a continuing student of the renowned dancer Aisha Ali (www.aisha-ali.com) from whom she learned the value of artistic heritage, authenticity, and performance centered research. In all of her teachings Jaynie acknowledges the connections between dance, culture, and identity and emphasizes awareness about contemporary and historical performance traditions. She is known for her improvisational performance ability, Egyptian drum solo technique, and Turkish athleticism.
