Indigenous music in East Timor

A small post here, but many more to come. Thanks to the Jerome Foundation pitching in to this trip, I was able to come to East Timor. Sunday, May 2, was my first exposure to live indigenous East Timorese music. In this picture is master ladako player Amaku Aman and his sister (with the small sticks). This is a very old bamboo instrument, with ostensibly some relation to the "Valiha" of Madagascar, but exists in different forms with different names across that swath of islands (an Austronesian…See More

About Me And My Work
Jen Shyu is a vocalist, composer, improviser, performance artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist (piano, erhu, moon guitar), who, as a soloist and bandleader, has been a formidable force and pacesetter in the creative music, vocal, and interdisciplinary worlds. Aside from being a core member of saxophonist pioneer Steve Coleman’s Five Elements for the past 7 years, Shyu has collaborated with the late great poet Sekou Sundiata, Anthony Braxton, Mark Dresser, Dave Burrell, Bobby Previte, Mat Maneri, Ben Monder, Taylor Ho Bynum, and many others including her band members David Binney, Miles Okazaki, Dan Weiss, Shane Endsley, David Bryant, and Thomas Morgan. She has recently sung a featured role in the recording of Anthony Braxton’s “Trillium E” opera to be released in 2011. Her band Jade Tongue has performed at Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and venues nationally and internationally. Shyu has received fellowships and commissions from the MacDowell Colony, Asian Cultural Council, Jerome Foundation, Roulette Space “Emerging Artist” Commission & Jazz Gallery “Vocal Commission” (both supported by the Jerome Foundation), Bronx Council on the Arts "BRIO" Award for Composition. Places I Would Like To Visit
Most recently, I've done cultural and musical research in Cuba, Brazil, Taiwan, China, and now East Timor. My most extensive research so far has been in Taiwan, with the indigenous music there and folk music from Hengchun mainly learning from Chen Ying, Zhang Ri Gui, and Zhu Ding Sun, and also in China, in the shuochang and kunqu traditions from Zhang Wei Dong. I hope to spend time in Indonesia if i can while I am on this side of the world.
Art Forms And Cultures I Would Like To Engage With
Well, I have many, but one is with Lin Hwai Min, whose work I love. Many dreams are coming true, for instance Robert Moses used a song of mine in his latest work, and I've gotten to work with Steve Coleman and Anthony Braxton and Mark Dresser - but far off dreams are William Forsythe's work.
My Creative Influences & Favorite Artists
too many to name.... Steve Coleman, Von Freeman, Satoshi Haga, all the folk and indigenous musicians that I have had the honor of listening to and recording, Bela Bartok, David Lynch, Maya Deren, Chen Ying, Chen Da, all narrative folk musics like pans'ori and shuochang, and all creative forces in the universe.
My Artistic Affiliations
Steve Coleman & Five Elements, Anthony Braxton Trillium
