Network of Ensemble Theatres Micro-Fest

The Network of Ensemble Theatres had a Micro-Fest in Philadelphia this weekend, featuring 'genre-defying works'--here's the question posed for the gathering:How do we discuss/support works that defy genre/discipline? How is genre challenged or changed? When you push genre/discipline boundaries, when (does?) the work ceases to be theatre? Does that matter?Philadelphia will highlight the cross-genre and inter-disciplinary work created by ensembles that explodes genre and pushes boundaries.   We…See More

About Me And My Work
Theatre artist--actor, director, playwright, teacher--35 years in a collaborative ensemble and actor-training center....
Artistic Experiences I Have Had On My Travels
The best artistic experiences I have had on my travels have been meeting other artists while performing at festivals in other countries--places like Venezuela, Uruguay, Sweden, Italy, Egypt--I love the opportunity to meet other artists, to see their work, to see productions I couldn't possibly have imagined. And many times, to convince those we meet that all Americans are not like the people they see portrayed in tv shows or movies.
Places I Would Like To Visit
I would love to travel to Bulgaria, China, Japan, New Zealand, Mongolia....actually, anyplace I've never been!
Art Forms And Cultures I Would Like To Engage With
I would love to finish a collaboration with designer G.W. Mercier on a theater piece called "Flock," which he wrote and designed. We did one workshopping of it and ran out of money....
I would love to engage with Tuvan singers, with Russian clowns, with Mexican mask makers, with Odissi dancers, with funeral songs of all cultures, with just about every art form there is.......!

Traditional Yurok river culture meets actors-in-training: Dell'Arte International's Rural Residency

Posted on June 12, 2010 at 8:12pm 1 Comment

At the end of every school year at Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre, the first-year students undertake a Rural Residency. The RR is a 10-day trip to a rural community in Northern California where the students offer a work exchange to the community and create a site-specific performance for that community at the conclusion. They camp out, cook, rehearse, etc as a collaborating ensemble, without faculty presence. It is a transformative… Continue

Hey Joan - I'm glad to be here too. The site seems to offer a lot for people who seek out lots of education and can pay for it... not sure I am in the latter category at the moment, but happy to see what is hear. And grateful for the Ashland job description you sent me. I actually would be pretty open to a job like that... although the time frame they are looking for is a little extreme and the salary range they are looking at, probably not something I could swing. But anything like that, keep sending along. Thanks. It was GREAT to chat with you. As always, the humor and spirit in your heart and voice is a rare treasure I find in our friendship. I miss seeing you more often! Maybe this summer..... love -s
