I used to work at a ship yard at Tacoma Boatbuilding in the 70's, Tacoma WA, and I was living in Germany when Mr. Kohl was Chancellor of Germany. While working at Tacoma Ship yard I used to drive by Peterson boatyard, they used to build PT boats for WWll. I took pictures of it and used them for reference material. The boat yards are no longer in existence.
Many of the artists painted the human condition of the times, the hardships and corruption that went on. They painted not pretty blue sky landscapes but mostly somber cityscape that showed people at work. I was influenced by that, also somewhat of the ashcan school. I was very much influenced by Jack Levines work, a WPA artist who also painted political Satire of the times, I do some of that because it still persists and probably always will. I also paint cityscape of mostly old and by gone era of Americans working in factories, but that could be of today, I don't date my paintings with the subject matter, I paint what I see at the present time but of structures that where built in the past. I find modern buildings boring without character. As Jack levine I like to show some people how they really are and not as they see themselves I too try a Satire now and then. I'm working on one now that is behind me on my website.
