About Me And My Work

My background is in American and international theatre, where I work primarily as a director and lighting designer., frequently on the creation or original work. Most often this work is devised through an ensemble process. I also run the Ko Festival of Performance which happens each summer in Amherst, MA Each summer our Festival is centered on a theme such as “Stories of Illness and Healing” or “The Immigrant’s Journey.” Performances are accompanied by facilitated discussions and lobby displays that contextualize the ideas presented in the work in an effort to engender inter-audience/artist exchange and provide opportunities for civic dialogue. We also offer a unique array of 6-day workshops where adults, both local and national, can study techniques and approaches to making new work with master teachers. Other activities include internships, and rehearsal residencies where individual artists or ensembles can develop new work or reconsider older pieces in their repertoire.

Art Forms And Cultures I Would Like To Engage With

Currently I love helping artists understand how to use light int their performances. I enjoy opening up the world of theatrical design and tech to performers and directors and conversely helping designers understand devised work and ensemble process. I also particularly enjoy creating work from historical and documentary sources, touring. and hosting dynamic artistic experiences at the Ko Festival.

My Creative Influences & Favorite Artists

So many....Mabou Mines, with whom I worked for a number of years, but also the World and American experimental theatre scen form the early 80s on. In no particular order - Brook, Kantor, Mnouchkine, Meredith Monk, Ping Chong, Complicite and other Lecoq based companies, Charles Ludlam, Roy Hart Theatre, Tadashi Suzuki, Pig Iron, Naoko Maeshiba, Mnouchkine, Ralph Lee/Mettawee and SO MANY MORE....
