"A young woman with the most serene countenance sat in the seat opposite me on a 12-hour bus trip. She had a tiny baby with her as well. She was so very beautiful and seemed so self-contained. Unfortunately she had to put up with a drunken passenger…"
I work mostly in oils, and love sculpting. My trademark is variety. I exhibit my work in Velddrif and other venues in towns on the West Coast of South Africa, as well as through F.A.T.E. (Facilitators for Art and Travelling Exhibitions, based in Velddrif).
I paint subjects ranging from realistic landscapes, still lives, seascapes and portraits to dreamscapes and imaginary scenes. Portraits are done in oils, pastels, pencil or charcoal, from life or from photographs; wildlife from photographs in conjunction with fellow-artist and photographer Jackie During. Copies of the old masters’ works are executed on commission. Sculpture includes ceramics, papier maché and relief works comprising ceramics, found materials, plastic, hardware products and materials, and natural materials.
I also enjoy the exacting task of book illustration, which I do on a free-lance basis, as well as translation, editing and proof-reading in English and Afrikaans (eg. legislation, educational comic strips, children’s books). I did a weekly newspaper’s cartoon for a year and have illustrated six children’s books.
I work from home in Velddrif on the West Coast as an artist, art teacher, and freelance language practitioner and book-illustrator.
Art Forms And Cultures I Would Like To Engage With
So many people want their portraits or those of their loved ones done, but cannot afford it. I always wish I could do it for them for free.
