Vivian Fung has emerged as one of the foremost composers of her generation. Her music was described by the San José Mercury News as "enchanting . . . . [H]er music . . . summons images of dusk and reaches for hidden places and states of mind." Fung’s Pizzicato has been part of the Ying Quartet’s repertoire for the past two seasons and has been recently described by the New York Times as “an evocative work . . . the most memorable part of the ensemble’s concert.”
Highlights of Fung’s recent performances include a standing-ovation premiere of her String Quartet No. 2 commissioned by the Shanghai Quartet for their 25th anniversary season; a sold-out concert of her Glimpses at the Americas Society with pianist Jenny Lin as part of the Metropolis Ensemble’s concert season; and the New York premiere of her Miniatures for clarinet quintet as part of the American Modern Ensemble’s concert “Women Who Rock.”
Fung was born in Edmonton, Canada, in 1975 and earned her doctorate from The Juilliard School in 2002. She has increasingly embraced non-Classical influences, including jazz and non-Western sources such as folksongs from the minority regions of China and Indonesian gamelan music. Fung's upcoming projects include a new piano concerto for the Metropolis Ensemble and pianist Jenny Lin, to be premiered at Le Poisson Rouge in New York this coming November 2009.
She is on the faculty of The Juilliard School and is an associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre.

RUBIN MUSEUM OF ART: presents an acoustic evening of classical ragas of North India with:
Paul Livingstone (sitar), Nitin Mitta (tabla) & Leticia Meza (tanpura)
Friday, October 16, 7PM ~ $20
International performing artist Paul Livingstone is one of the few American artists to have learned directly from the living legend of Indian music Pandit Ravi Shankar. He also learned extensively from sarod maestro Pandit Rajeev Taranath. Paul's authentic feel in performance of classical ragas and level of virtuosity of his sitar playing are rarely heard from artists of non-Indian origin. He has given concert performances & workshops on traditional and crossover music around the US, Mexico, South East Asia, Spain and India when he was recognized in the Calcutta press as "an Indian soul in white skin". In the creative tradition of Hindustani (North Indian) classical music Paul has been rigorously trained since 1985 in India and the US to play and improvise in the raga system (traditional melodic forms) on sitar. www.tanpura.com
Nitin Mitta is a highly sought after tabla accompanist who has performed with some of India's most celebrated musicians, including Pandit Jasraj, Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Pandit Rajeev Taranath, Pandit Vishwa, Mohan Bhatt, Ustad Nishat Khan and Ustad Shahid Parvez. In addition to being an international performing artist of Indian Classical Music, Nitin has also been involved in various jazz crossover projects. www.nitinmitta.org
