"Hello Ruth, thanks for this post...I see it as a timely reminder of what art 'really is' and how much of what has become 'art' is simply a process within a market place. However, I am left to wondering why it is that…"

"LOL. It seems quite obvious then, that blood type in fact has NOTHING to do with creativity, or anything to do with anything, other than a physiological fact, and can possibly used to determine lineage. But is not always consistent. And I think this…"

"Living in a racially charged South Africa, and refusing to succumb to racism, I have always found that there is no such thing as a 'pure' European race (so to speak). ALL Europeans are racial hybrids of alarming diverstiy. I find this…"

TELL TALE review by poet, blogger, journalist Michelle McGraine

"My mind is on fire. It is half past ten on a Saturday morning and I am lying in bed. I have just finished reading Tell Tale by Helge Janssen, the revolutionary DJ and a pioneer of the alternative club scene in South Africa through the height of the…"

About Me And My Work
self taught through experience. my paintings represent a journey of resistance to the apartheid regime. they also tell of a personal journey of discovery using self-discovered and common archetypal images. at one time strongly influenced by jung, but have since grown into my own perspectives. have not painted since 1996 and am currently attempting to reconnect with my creative self, coming out of a long DETOUR of futile involvement with the post apartheid system as an educator. please visit my web site at www.helge.co.za and explore my wide range - fashion, performance, dance, writing, poetry, film reviews, book reviews etc - of my creative endeavours. sadly i live in a country that has been completely unable to process this creative input.
Places I Would Like To Visit
travelled extensively in europe visiting almost every art gallery i could find. most important discovery at that time was the works of hundertwasser and egon schiele. most interesting exhibition was the picasso to lichtenstein exhibition at the tate. stunned by the films of andy warhol. astounded at 'les enfant du paradis' and blown away by performances by lindsay kemp and attended movement classes given by him which had a further profound effect on my awakeing artistic sensibility. On my return to South Africa, I spent an enormous amount of time transforming my European experiences into what I considered to be a specific African format. I discovered that what united my 'european-ness' with my 'african-ness' was ENERGY....the specific energy that could only be found in Africa. I went through many years of 'honing' this idea, which eventually began to manifest in the founding of a performance group called 'the Body of Despondent Artists'. It was indeed a priviledge to work with this truly committed group as we were united by a desire to experiment to grow and to create. Living within the apartheid regime as a white dissenter created a peculiar type of insanity that was indeed extremely difficult to avoid. Looking back now, I think I was, for many years completely off my head! Being a white dissenter was fraught with many challenges.
Art Forms And Cultures I Would Like To Engage With
Still need to think about this one!
My Creative Influences & Favorite Artists
Virtually ALL of them. However I do not like the work of Dali. Was at one time greatly influenced by JUNG, and was a member of the Jungian Society which held regular monthly meetings. Always responsive to the stunning array of African sights which never fail to intrigue with its spontaneous beauty. Durban hosts the largest Indian community outside of India and feel deeply privileged to experience their cultural contributions.
