Fortuitous analogues - oral traditions across cultures

After my sporadic status update[!] I was asked about what I was doing, and this is what I said. At the moment, it's all a bit "untidy", so to speak. But let me go through what's still in my head.

I'm aiming to write a "play in music" - where specific groupings of instruments in a sextet taking on characters, but using the language of the performers [who are all improvising musicians]. There are no words or images. The audience picks up the drama from the sounds/music. Although… Continue

I travel therefore I must be...

I am 42, the age shows but I am in pretty good condition for the miles on my odometer. I have travelled the world extensively, although I have still many trails to follow. The journeys I have taken made me who I am. They educated me better than any institution could have, by far. I learned to smell, touch, hear and see, and I learned to give, loose laugh and fear. All this input, accumulated over a life lived many times over is what drives my output. I am a teacher and an artist, a quiet… Continue

ART SAVES LIVES: CC Interview with Amy Goldsmith Charmatz

Amy, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am 53 years old, married, with four wonderful cats, who are my family. I am disabled from the effects of brain surgery and radiation, and have poor balance and coordination, double vision and am very hard of hearing. Those is the facts as they stand, but I am lucky enough to be and do most of what I want, anyway I had next to nothing in the way of formal… Continue

My artist statement

Artist Statement

I am attracted to dances that engage people from a sociological context. What do I mean by sociological context? The type of work I actively

pursue are pieces that create a sense of community among people from

the subject matter which is usually about a very specific group of

people. I like to create movement from themes, images, poetry, prose,

free writing, and drawing in… Continue

Cultures and Blood: Is the art in you when you are born?

My wife and I are expecting our first child (yeah!) and as a result I was asked to find out my blood type. My wife is of Filipino/Irish descent and I am of German/British/Italian descent and my understanding is that knowing our blood types helps the doctor to determine health risks the co-heir or heiress to Create Culture might face. As it turns out my blood type is B Negative. I wouldn't have given this a second thought and…

my first books...

Let me introduce you to my first three books... the first two through collaboration with the artists...

The Gift on the Water / Omi Odára

Viver Brasil Dance Company

Viver Brasil inspired me with their simplicity and at the same time

their richness, their respectful approach to the roots of the Bahian

traditional dance.

I'm amazed with their deep understanding of movement and sound, while

choreographing old style candomblé and/or carnival… Continue

Mo - For me, making art is like breathing. I just do it.

Mo (aka DotArtDude).....

Tell me a little bit about yourself

My earliest memory of drawing was making lines in the sand at the beach in Pass Christian, Mississippi.

Growing up in New Orleans, I was inspired by the decorated floats at Mardi Gras. Art supplies were always available at home and in art classes at school. At Mississippi State University I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. I… Continue

Sheema Kermani - Dance cannot be stopped by laws and regulations

Tell me a little bit about yourself

I am an unconventional person living in a very conventional society. I am a Feminist a Marxist and I believe that human beings need to become better people- more tolerant and more caring of others. I am an artist and I look at the arts in a holistic way. I am interested in doing away with the divisions created between dance and theatre for instance. I like all Art that moves me- or touches my… Continue

Gail Troutman - I dream about pieces of fabric and objects with vivid colors and unusual shapes that I find under my bed.

Gail Troutman

Mother, wife, daughter, and artist........

Tell me a little about yourself.

GT: I wish I could take every animal and human that is sick or sad or frightened and make it happy again. I love laughing really hard. I think of myself as a mother, a wife, a daughter and an artist in that order. I am happiest when I am alone and working.

I have little patience with what I call "Vanilla People". Vanilla people… Continue

Find a 5-Star Couch to Crash on @ CouchSurfing.org!

No Tom, not that kind of couch surfing! I'm talking about a website that helps provide inexpensive accommodations to starving artists traveling the world. Personally, I've spent many a night "sleeping" on friends' sofas as I've traveled. It's a great way to wander on a budget while spending quality time with really interesting people (as long as you don't overstay your welcome - like that time I holed up in Utah for three weeks of… Continue
