AFAR - a magazine for "Experiential Travel"

I just received my copy of the new travel magazine AFAR in the mail. I was intrigued because the editors of the magazine say they are focusing on "Experiential travel [which] connects you with the authentic essence of a place and its people, deepening your understanding of the world, its cultures, and yourself."

I wince when I see something described as "authentic". It gets overused- and for me authenticity is in the mind of the beholder- but I thought the approach was very interesting, and indicative of a growing desire for deeper and more meaningful experiences in travel. Nobody wants to be a "tourist", we all want to be "travelers", right?

In the copy I have there are several interesting articles, including one about Sao Luis, the Reggae capital of Brazil; Nizamuddin, a Sufi community in Delhi; and a list of six arts workshops around the world, including one in Ghana produced by Cross-Cultural Collaborative, which is also in the Trips roster here. My only disappointment is that the articles are for the most part not really in depth and so it is difficult to get drawn in like you can with magazine such as the New Yorker. In any case, it brings a fresh approach to travel, one that I welcome, and so I will most likely subscribe to it. If you have read AFAR, what are your thoughts? Are you planning a trip as a result?
